Skiing in Lake Tahoe — FAQ
- North Tahoe or South Tahoe?
- North Tahoe (Palisades, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Mt. Rose) tends to get bigger storms and steeper terrain. South Tahoe (Heavenly, Kirkwood, Sierra-at-Tahoe) gets more sun and longer trail networks plus the South Lake nightlife. SnowSure's leaderboard above shows current conditions on both sides.
- When does Tahoe skiing peak?
- January–March. Sierra storms are often warm and heavy — "Sierra cement" — but the volume is huge, with Palisades Tahoe routinely topping 500 inches per season.
- How is the snow compared to Utah or Colorado?
- Tahoe gets more total snowfall than most Colorado resorts but the snow is denser and wetter. For light powder, head to Utah or Colorado. For sheer volume and a giant terrain network, Tahoe's hard to beat.
