Skiing in Lake Tahoe — FAQ

North Tahoe or South Tahoe?
North Tahoe (Palisades, Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Mt. Rose) tends to get bigger storms and steeper terrain. South Tahoe (Heavenly, Kirkwood, Sierra-at-Tahoe) gets more sun and longer trail networks plus the South Lake nightlife. SnowSure's leaderboard above shows current conditions on both sides.
When does Tahoe skiing peak?
January–March. Sierra storms are often warm and heavy — "Sierra cement" — but the volume is huge, with Palisades Tahoe routinely topping 500 inches per season.
How is the snow compared to Utah or Colorado?
Tahoe gets more total snowfall than most Colorado resorts but the snow is denser and wetter. For light powder, head to Utah or Colorado. For sheer volume and a giant terrain network, Tahoe's hard to beat.
