Skiing in Honshu (Japow) — FAQ

Hakuba or Niseko?
Hakuba (Honshu) has steeper, higher terrain (1,000+ m vertical, real alpine bowls), denser snow, and direct Tokyo access. Niseko (Hokkaido) has more reliable powder and easier tree-skiing but smaller vertical. For most travellers, Hakuba is the more all-round choice.
Is Hakuba one resort or many?
Hakuba Valley is a collection of 10 ski areas (Happo-One, Goryu, 47, Iwatake, Cortina, etc.) sharing a common lift pass. SnowSure currently exposes Hakuba and Happo-One as the two most prominent.
When is the Honshu ski season?
Mid-December through early April for most resorts. January–February for the deepest powder; March for spring conditions and longer daylight.
